AMA 11th Edition Guide

The definitive standard for medical and scientific manuscripts. Based on the AMA Manual of Style, 11th Edition — used by JAMA, NEJM, and leading biomedical journals.

Official AMA Manual

What is AMA 11th Edition?

The AMA Manual of Style, 11th Edition (Feb 2020), is the global rulebook for medical and scientific publishing. It dictates how to cite sources, abbreviate journals, present data, and report statistics, requirements enforced by virtually every peer-reviewed medical journal, grant agency, and medical school.

When instructions say “use AMA format,” they mean your references, tables, and ethical disclosures must match this manual exactly. Page layout (margins, fonts, headings) is left to your professor or journal’s own checklist, so always double-check their add-on rules before you submit.

AMA-Approved Font Options

AMA 11th edition mentions serif for body text and suggests sans-serif for headings, but check individual journal requirements. Times New Roman 12pt is commonly used in medical manuscripts.

Source: AMA Manual of Style, 11th ed. — Verified December 10, 2025

RECOMMENDED

Times New Roman

Traditional serif font universally accepted in medical publishing. Most medical journals and schools expect this font for manuscripts.

12 point
Standard for medical journals
Serif font
Recommended for body text
Professional
Traditional medical publishing

Arial

Arial is an acceptable sans-serif option for headings according to AMA’s flexible guidance.

12 point
Standard size
Sans-serif
AMA suggests for headings

Calibri

Calibri may be used for headings; AMA does not mandate this font, though it is commonly readable on screens.

12 point
Modern appearance
Sans-serif
Good for headings

4 Heading Levels

AMA uses 4 heading levels. Levels 1-3 are standalone headings with text on the next line. Level 4 is a 'run-in' heading where text continues on the same line.

Level 1

Main Section Heading

Format: Bold, Left-Aligned, Title Case
Example: Introduction | Methods | Results
Used for major sections. Text starts on next line.
Level 2

Major Subsection

Format: Left-Aligned, Bold, Title Case
Example: Study Design and Setting
Used for major subsections. Text starts on next line.
Level 3

Minor Subsection

Format: Left-Aligned, Bold Italic, Title Case
Example: Participant Selection Criteria
Used for minor subsections. Text starts on next line.
Level 4

Run-In Heading

Format: Indented, Italic, Sentence case, Period.
Example: Data collection procedures. Researchers gathered information over 12 months...
Heading and text appear on the same line; paragraph indented 0.5 inch.

In-Text Citation Rules

AMA uses superscript Arabic numerals for citations. Users are responsible for numbering citations in order of appearance.

Citation Format

Single citation: ¹
Consecutive: ¹⁻³ (en dash, no spaces)
Non-consecutive: ¹,³,⁵ (comma, no spaces)
Page reference: ¹⁽ᵖ¹⁸⁸⁾

Placement Rules

Outside periods and commas
Inside colons and semicolons
After quotation marks
Before dashes

Example: "Diabetes affects millions of people worldwide¹. Recent studies have shown improvements¹⁻³. Multiple groups confirmed these findings¹,³,⁵: reduced HbA1c and weight loss."

Reference List Requirements

⚠️ CRITICAL: NO Hanging Indent

Medical journal references must be flush left with NO hanging indent. This is a common formatting error in medical manuscripts.

Reference Format

• Numbered (order of citation)
• Flush left (NO indent)
• Single-spaced within entry
• No blank lines between entries
• Section titled "References"

Author Format

✓ Smith JM (no periods)
✓ List all if ≤6 authors
✓ If more than 6 authors: list the first 3 followed by et al (user must provide correct author list).
✓ Commas between authors

Example Reference Entry

1. Smith JM, Johnson AB, Williams CD. Treatment outcomes in type 2 diabetes. JAMA. 2020;323(15):1456-1463. doi:10.1001/jama.2020.1234

What SimpleFormat Does NOT Do

We handle formatting, not content creation. Here's what remains your responsibility:

Citation numbering order
We auto-detect citations, but you must number them in order of first appearance.
Reference entry content
We format the layout; you write each entry in correct AMA style.
Title page content
You provide title, authors, affiliations. We format the layout.
Medical/scientific accuracy
Content, statistics, and ethical compliance are your domain.
Grammar & writing quality
Spelling, grammar, and sentence structure are your responsibility.
Journal-specific requirements
Some journals have additional rules beyond AMA 11. Always check guidelines.

Thesis & Dissertation Support

Unlike standard journal papers, theses and dissertations have additional structural requirements. We handle these automatically:

✓ Title page (institution-specific layout)
✓ Copyright page (optional)
✓ Committee/approval page (optional)
✓ Abstract (structured or simple)
✓ Dedication & Acknowledgments
✓ Table of Contents (Word TOC field)

AMA 11 Formatting FAQ

70 frequently asked questions about AMA Manual of Style 11th Edition formatting

AMA recommends serif fonts for body text and sans-serif for headings. The standard is 12-pt Times New Roman for body text with Arial for headings. SimpleFormat automatically applies these AMA-compliant font settings when formatting your medical manuscript.

Source: AMA Manual of Style 11th ed., Chapter 20; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

AMA 11 requires 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins on all sides. The right margin should be unjustified (ragged right). SimpleFormat applies correct AMA margins automatically, including 1.5-inch binding margins for theses and dissertations.

Source: AMA Manual of Style 11th ed., Chapter 20.1; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Double-space body text; single-space abstracts, block quotes, tables, figures, and references; double-space between reference entries. This complex spacing pattern is error-prone when done manually. SimpleFormat handles all AMA spacing rules automatically.

Source: AMA Manual of Style 11th ed., Chapter 20.1; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Use consecutive superscript Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3). Place citation numbers outside periods and commas, but inside colons and semicolons. The first cited source is numbered 1 and reuses that number throughout. SimpleFormat auto-detects and formats superscript citations correctly.

Source: AMA Manual of Style 11th ed., Chapter 3.1; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Use commas for non-consecutive numbers (e.g., 1,3,5) and hyphens for consecutive ranges (e.g., 1-4). Example: "as reported previously.1,4-7,19" SimpleFormat preserves your citation groupings while ensuring correct superscript formatting.

Source: AMA Manual of Style 11th ed., Chapter 3.3; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Number references in order of first citation (not alphabetically). References are flush left with NO hanging indent—this is the #1 formatting mistake in medical manuscripts. Single-space within entries, double-space between. SimpleFormat automatically formats references flush-left without hanging indents.

Format: Author AA, Author BB. Article title. Abbreviated Journal Name. Year;Vol(Issue):Pages. doi:10.xxxx/xxxxx. Example: Smith AB, Jones CD. Treatment outcomes in diabetes. JAMA. 2020;324(5):412-418. doi:10.1001/jama.2020.1234

In the reference list, list the first 3 authors followed by "et al" (no period after "al"). In-text narrative mentions use first author + "et al" for 3 or more authors. Note: AMA uses "et al" not "et al." — SimpleFormat applies this correctly.

AMA defines 4 heading levels: Level 1 (Bold, Title Case, Left), Level 2 (Bold, Title Case, Left), Level 3 (Bold Italic, Title Case, Left), Level 4 (Italic, run-in with period, Sentence case). Sans-serif fonts (Arial) are suggested for headings but not required. SimpleFormat applies correct heading hierarchy automatically based on your document structure.

Number tables consecutively (Table 1, Table 2). The label and number are bold; the title is sentence case, not bold. Use horizontal rules only (no vertical lines). Table footnotes use superscript lowercase letters (a, b, c), placed below the table.

Source: AMA Manual of Style 11th ed., Chapter 4.1; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Number figures consecutively (Figure 1, Figure 2). Place the number and title above the figure. The legend or caption (≤40 words) goes below. For a single figure, use "Figure" without a number. SimpleFormat positions figure labels correctly per AMA requirements.

The top mistakes are: (1) hanging indents in references (AMA requires flush-left), (2) wrong P value format (should be italic P with no leading zero: P = .05), (3) missing non-breaking spaces in SI units (100 mg not 100mg), (4) wrong citation placement, (5) alphabetizing references (should be numbered by citation order). SimpleFormat auto-corrects all of these.

Use italic capital P, no leading zero for values less than 1: P = .05, P < .001. For exact values, report to 2-3 significant digits. This is one of the most common formatting errors. SimpleFormat automatically detects and corrects P value formatting throughout your document.

Insert a non-breaking space between the number and unit: 100 mg, 5 mL, 37°C. Do not add a period after unit abbreviations. Use lowercase for units (mg, not MG). SimpleFormat inserts non-breaking spaces automatically to prevent awkward line breaks.
