What is Amazon KDP 6" x 9" Format?

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) 6" x 9" is one of the most popular trim sizes for self-published paperback books. It's the standard size for novels, non-fiction, memoirs, and most trade paperbacks you see on Amazon.

When you upload a book to KDP Print, Amazon's automated system checks every file against strict technical requirements. Get even one specification wrong (like margins or image resolution), and your book will be rejected instantly.

NON-NEGOTIABLE

KDP Technical Requirements

Amazon's automated checker enforces these requirements. Every single one must be correct or your upload will be rejected.

Trim Size Specifications

The trim size is the final size of your book after printing and cutting. Amazon KDP offers two options depending on whether you need bleed.

MOST COMMON

No-Bleed Interior

6.00" x 9.00"

Use this when all content (text and images) stays away from the page edges. This is the standard for most books with text and simple graphics.

When to Use
  • Novels and fiction
  • Text-heavy non-fiction
  • No full-page images
  • No background colors to edge
ADVANCED

With-Bleed Interior

6.125" x 9.25"

Add bleed when any element needs to extend to the page edge. Content must extend 0.125" beyond the trim line.

When to Use
  • Full-page images or photos
  • Background colors to edge
  • Decorative borders
  • Any content touching page edge

Margin Requirements by Page Count

Amazon KDP enforces minimum margins that scale with page count. Thicker books need larger inside (gutter) margins to account for the binding.

No-Bleed Margins (Minimums)

Page CountInside (Gutter)OutsideTopBottom
24-1500.375"0.25"0.25"0.25"

701-8280.875"0.375"0.375"0.375"

Important Notes

  • These are minimums - using larger margins is always safe
  • Using smaller inside margin than required = instant rejection
  • Bleed content must extend 0.125" beyond the trim line
  • No live text allowed in the bleed area

Book Formatting Terms Explained

New to self-publishing? Here's what these professional terms mean in plain English.

Mirror Margins
Left and right pages face each other like a mirror. The inside margin (near the spine) is larger so text doesn't disappear into the fold. Margins swap automatically on alternating pages.
Gutter (Inside Margin)
The space between your text and the book's spine. Thicker books need bigger gutters because more pages get swallowed by the binding.
Recto & Verso Pages
Recto = right-hand page (odd numbers). Verso = left-hand page (even numbers). Chapters always start on a recto (right) page.
Running Heads
Small text at the top of pages showing book title, chapter name, or author. Called "running" because it runs across multiple pages.
Bleed
When content needs to reach the page edge, extend it 0.125" beyond the trim line. This extra area gets trimmed off. Most text-only books don't need bleed.
Trim Size
The final dimensions of your printed book after pages are cut. 6" x 9" means each page measures 6.00" x 9.00".

Good news: SimpleFormat Pro handles all of this automatically. Mirror margins, recto page starts, running heads, and correct gutter sizes are all applied for you.

Paper Options

Cream Paper

MOST POPULAR FOR FICTION

Softer, easier on eyes for long reading. Traditional novel look. Max 776 pages.

White Paper

BEST FOR IMAGES

Bright white, crisp appearance. Best for books with images or diagrams. Max 828 pages.

Font Requirements

Amazon KDP has two mandatory rules about fonts. Everything else is your creative choice.

MANDATORY

Minimum Font Size

7pt

Anything smaller than 7 points will be automatically rejected by KDP's upload checker.

MANDATORY

Font Embedding

All Fonts Must Be Embedded

When you export to PDF, fonts must be embedded (or subset-embedded) in the file.

How to Verify Fonts Are Embedded

Open your PDF in Adobe Reader → File → Properties → Fonts tab. Every font should show "(Embedded Subset)" or "(Embedded)".

Font Recommendations (Industry Best Practice)

Body Text Size
Sweet spot for readability. 11pt is most common for novels.
10-12pt
Line Spacing
1.15 or 1.2 most common. Too tight = cramped, too loose = disconnected.
1.15-1.5x
Serif (Fiction)
Garamond, Palatino, Times New Roman, Constantia, Cambria
Recommended
Sans-serif (Non-fiction)
Helvetica, Arial, Calibri
Recommended
Alignment
Justified text is standard for novels. Left-aligned for poetry.
Justified
Paragraph Indent
First line indent 0.2"-0.3". Don't indent first paragraph after headings.
0.2-0.3"
Black Text Color
Use 100% K (pure black) for body text. Rich black causes blurry text.
100% K
Widows & Orphans
Enable widow/orphan control to avoid single lines at page top/bottom.
Enable
CRITICAL

Image Resolution Requirement

300 DPI

All images must be at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) at their final printed size. This is the most common rejection reason for books with images.

Why 72 DPI Images Get Rejected

Images from websites or screenshots are typically 72 DPI (screen resolution). They look fine on your computer but print blurry and pixelated. You cannot artificially increase DPI - you need the original high-resolution source.

Color Mode: RGB, CMYK, or Grayscale

KDP Accepts All Color Modes

Unlike what some sources claim, KDP accepts RGB, CMYK, and Grayscale images. KDP converts as needed during printing.

Recommendation: Keep images in RGB unless you have specific color matching needs. RGB gives KDP's system more color data to work with.

Full-Bleed Images

When an image needs to extend to the edge of the page (no white border), you must use the bleed page size.

Page Size with Bleed

6.125" x 9.25"

Images must extend 0.125" beyond the trim line on all edges.

Safe Zone

0.375" margin

Keep important content (faces, text) at least 0.375" from trim edge.

Additional Image Specifications

Supported File Formats

JPEG, PNG, TIFF are recommended. Avoid BMP and GIF for print quality.

QR Codes

Minimum 0.75" × 0.75" at 300 DPI. Test scanning before final upload.

Line Art & Diagrams

Use vector formats (SVG, EPS) when possible, or 600+ DPI for sharp lines.

Transparency

Flatten transparency before export. PNG transparency may cause unexpected results.

What SimpleFormat Does NOT Do

SimpleFormat is a formatting tool, not a writing or design service.

We don't create cover designs.

You must design your own cover or hire a designer. Use KDP's Cover Calculator for dimensions.

We don't write your book content.

You need to provide all text, chapter titles, and front/back matter.

We don't handle ISBN registration.

KDP provides a free ISBN, or you can purchase your own from Bowker (US).

We don't check grammar or writing quality.

You're responsible for grammar, spelling, and content quality.

What We Don't Automate

These KDP requirements require specialized tools or manual verification:

Image DPI verification

We can't verify image resolution (300 DPI minimum). Check your images in Photoshop or GIMP.

Font embedding verification

We embed fonts in DOCX, but you should verify in your final PDF export.

PDF export settings

PDF/X-1a compliance, transparency flattening, and color mode (CMYK vs RGB) are set during PDF export.

Bleed area content

If using bleed, you must extend images to the edge. We set correct bleed margins but can't extend your images.

File size optimization

KDP has a 650MB limit. Large image files should be compressed before upload.

KDP Print Formatting FAQ

70 frequently asked questions about Amazon KDP 6" x 9" print formatting

A 5 × 8 KDP interior must measure exactly 5.00 inches wide by 8.00 inches tall, excluding bleed. Any deviation will result in a preflight error during upload. SimpleFormat Pro validates these dimensions automatically during export.

Source: Amazon KDP Print Setup Guidelines; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

A 6 × 9 KDP interior must measure exactly 6.00 inches wide by 9.00 inches tall, excluding bleed. This is Amazon's most popular trim size for trade paperbacks. SimpleFormat Pro applies this geometry automatically.

Source: Amazon KDP Print Setup Guidelines; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. Both 5 × 8 and 6 × 9 interiors must use portrait orientation only. Landscape layouts require selecting a different trim size from KDP's options. SimpleFormat Pro enforces portrait orientation for these trim sizes.

Source: Amazon KDP Interior Formatting Help; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Minimum margins depend on page count. Outside, top, and bottom margins require at least 0.25 inches for no-bleed interiors (0.375 inches with bleed). Inside (gutter) margins range from 0.375 inches for books under 150 pages to 0.875 inches for books over 700 pages. SimpleFormat Pro calculates these margins automatically based on your page count.

Source: Amazon KDP Margin Calculator; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Yes. Amazon KDP applies the same margin rules to both 5 × 8 and 6 × 9 interiors. Only the page geometry differs between these two trim sizes. SimpleFormat Pro uses identical margin logic for both formats.

Source: Amazon KDP Print Specifications; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For both 5 × 8 and 6 × 9 books with fewer than 150 pages, the minimum inside (gutter) margin is 0.375 inches. This accommodates the binding without losing content in the spine. SimpleFormat Pro applies this margin automatically for shorter books.

Source: Amazon KDP Margin Calculator; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For books with 151 to 300 pages, the minimum inside margin increases to 0.5 inches. This additional space prevents text from being lost in the binding. SimpleFormat Pro adjusts gutter margins dynamically based on page count.

Source: Amazon KDP Margin Calculator; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For books with 301 to 500 pages, the minimum inside margin is 0.625 inches. Thicker books require progressively larger gutter margins. SimpleFormat Pro handles this calculation automatically.

Source: Amazon KDP Margin Calculator; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For books with 501 to 700 pages, the minimum inside margin is 0.75 inches. This ensures readability near the spine for thick paperbacks. SimpleFormat Pro applies the correct gutter for books of any length.

Source: Amazon KDP Margin Calculator; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For books with 701 to 828 pages, the minimum inside margin is 0.875 inches. This is the largest gutter requirement for KDP paperbacks. SimpleFormat Pro supports books up to the maximum page count with correct margins.

Source: Amazon KDP Margin Calculator; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. Margins larger than the stated minimums are always permitted and will not cause rejection. Many designers use larger margins for aesthetic purposes. SimpleFormat Pro allows custom margin adjustments above the minimum thresholds.

Source: Amazon KDP Help – Margins; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

All live text and critical content should remain at least 0.125 inches inside all margin boundaries. This safe zone prevents trimming or binding from affecting important content. SimpleFormat Pro enforces safe zone boundaries during formatting.

Source: Amazon KDP Interior Content Guidelines; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. Interior margin rules are identical for paperback and hardcover editions at both 5 × 8 and 6 × 9 trim sizes. The same interior file can be used for both formats. SimpleFormat Pro generates files compatible with both binding types.

Source: Amazon KDP Hardcover Formatting Guide; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Yes. Asymmetric margins are permitted provided the minimum inside margin is respected and no live content enters the unsafe zones near trim edges. SimpleFormat Pro validates margin compliance regardless of layout style.

Source: Amazon KDP Print Help; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. Each interior PDF must contain pages of exactly one trim size. Mixing 5 × 8 and 6 × 9 pages in a single file will result in immediate rejection. SimpleFormat Pro exports single-trim-size PDFs to ensure compliance.

Source: Amazon KDP Preflight Validation Rules; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Yes. Both trim sizes support bleed on the top, bottom, and outside edges. Bleed allows images and backgrounds to extend to the page edge after trimming. SimpleFormat Pro supports both bleed and no-bleed configurations.

Source: Amazon KDP Bleed Specifications; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Bleed content must extend exactly 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) beyond the trim edge on all bleed sides. For a 6 × 9 book, this means a total page size of 6.125 × 9.25 inches. SimpleFormat Pro applies correct bleed dimensions automatically.

Source: Amazon KDP Bleed Guidelines; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. Live text is never permitted in bleed areas. Only images, backgrounds, and decorative elements should extend into the bleed zone, as this area will be trimmed off. SimpleFormat Pro warns if text enters the bleed zone.

Source: Amazon KDP Interior Rules; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For a no-bleed 5 × 8 interior, use exactly 5.00 × 8.00 inches. No additional space is needed since content will not extend to the trim edge. SimpleFormat Pro sets this dimension automatically for no-bleed exports.

Source: Amazon KDP Page Size Specifications; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For a with-bleed 5 × 8 interior, use 5.125 × 8.25 inches. This includes the 0.125-inch bleed extension on the outside, top, and bottom edges (no bleed on spine side). SimpleFormat Pro calculates bleed dimensions automatically.

Source: Amazon KDP Bleed Specifications; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For a no-bleed 6 × 9 interior, use exactly 6.00 × 9.00 inches. This is the standard setup for text-heavy books without edge-to-edge images. SimpleFormat Pro applies this geometry for standard text interiors.

Source: Amazon KDP Page Size Specifications; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

For a with-bleed 6 × 9 interior, use 6.125 × 9.25 inches. This accommodates the required 0.125-inch bleed on three edges. SimpleFormat Pro handles bleed page sizing automatically.

KDP does not enforce a strict minimum, but fonts smaller than 7 points may trigger print quality warnings. Body text should generally be 10-12 points for readability. SimpleFormat Pro uses optimal font sizes for book interiors.

Source: Amazon KDP Print Quality Guidance; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. KDP allows any legible font with proper embedding permissions. Serif fonts like Garamond or Times are traditional for book interiors; sans-serif fonts are common for headings. SimpleFormat Pro supports all embeddable fonts.

Source: Amazon KDP Interior Formatting Help; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. Line spacing is entirely a design choice. Most fiction uses single or 1.15 spacing; non-fiction may use 1.5 spacing. KDP does not enforce spacing requirements. SimpleFormat Pro offers configurable line spacing options.

Source: Amazon KDP Content Guidelines; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

KDP does not mandate page number placement. Common positions include bottom center, top outside corner, or bottom outside corner. Numbers must remain within safe margins. SimpleFormat Pro places page numbers in KDP-compliant positions.

Source: Amazon KDP Print Help; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. Roman numerals for front matter are a publishing convention, not a KDP requirement. You may use Arabic numerals throughout or omit numbers from front matter entirely. SimpleFormat Pro handles front matter pagination automatically.

Source: Amazon KDP Interior Guidelines; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

While KDP allows flexibility, professional books follow traditional publishing conventions: front matter uses lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv…) and the main text (Chapter 1 onward) uses Arabic numerals starting at 1. Deviating from this norm can look unprofessional and confuse readers. SimpleFormat Pro applies this industry-standard numbering automatically.

Yes. Body text and thin lines should use pure black (K=100%, no CMY values). Rich black is reserved for large solid areas, not text. SimpleFormat Pro uses pure black for all body text.

Source: Amazon KDP Print Quality Best Practices; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

No. Rich black (mixing CMYK values) should never be used for body text or thin lines. It can cause registration issues and blurry text. Use 100% K only. SimpleFormat Pro applies correct black values automatically.

No. Spine width is calculated automatically based on page count and paper type. Interior formatting should focus on margins, not spine calculations. SimpleFormat Pro handles margin requirements independently of spine width.

Source: Amazon KDP Spine Calculator; Applied by: SimpleFormat Pro

Spine text requires a minimum of 79 pages (approximately 0.25 inches spine width). Books with fewer pages should leave the spine blank. SimpleFormat Pro calculates spine eligibility based on page count.
